Dirk Nowitzki had 34 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for his second career triple-double, and the Dallas Mavericks maintained their hold on the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with a 109-93 victory over the visiting Denver Nuggets on Monday night. Nowitzki made 4 of 5 from 3-point range and went 16 for 17 from the free-throw line as the Mavericks moved to 4-4 since the end of a season-best 13-game winning streak.
J. R. Smith scored 27 points and Nene had 14 for the Nuggets, who lost their fifth in six games. Carmelo Anthony, the league’s No. 3 scorer, went 3 for 16 from the floor and had 10 points, 18.9 below his average.
RAPTORS 103, BOBCATS 101 Chris Bosh had 22 points and 11 rebounds, Hedo Turkoglu hit the go-ahead 3-pointer a day after getting benched, and visiting Toronto picked up a key victory in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Raptors (36-37) entered having lost three straight and 13 of 17, but they managed to stop Charlotte’s three-game winning streak to stay in eighth place in the East, a game ahead of idle Chicago.
Toronto was up by 2 points when Sonny Weems missed two free throws with 13 seconds left to give Charlotte a chance. But Tyson Chandler could not handle Raymond Felton’s pass in the lane. It left the team owner Michael Jordan shaking his head as the Bobcats (38-35) remained in seventh in the East and surrendered the tie breaker to Toronto.
HORNETS 108, LAKERS 100 Chris Paul had 15 points and 13 assists, his first double-double since returning from an ankle injury, and David West scored 20 points for host New Orleans. Marcus Thornton added 18 points, including three 3-pointers, and his fellow rookie Darren Collison had 17 points for the Hornets. Kobe Bryant had 31 points and Pau Gasol added 26 points and 22 rebounds for the Lakers, who fell behind by 17 points in the fourth.
